Welcome to Golfing Engineer,
I love golf (who’d have thunk) I have been playing this wonderful game since I was about 12. Over the past 20+ years this journey has shafted from playing a few times a month with my dad and brother, to nearly every afternoon through high school and post-college to now have a wife and 2 little girls and lucky to get back out once or twice a month in the summer months. Through each of these phases my focus on golf has shifted as well, when I have been able to play frequently, I cared about getting to the course and scoring. When less frequent it has been oriented around improvement (such as speed or accuracy) and equipment (club building, training aids, and technology). This is where my formal education brought me down some incredibly dark rabbit holes.
As a Mechanical engineer, specializing in product design, physics… well let’s say it’s important. Since golf is just hitting a round object with a stick it’s pretty straightforward, right? Alright enough with the sarcasm, Golf has thousands of variables that make this game incredibly difficult, from the course layout, condition, and environmental factors to contorting your body to deliver the club with a neutral club path and downward attack angle. All of this without taking into consideration what club to choose. Let’s say golf is hard but that’s kind of what I love about it.
Wait a minute why are we here?
I want to drive to help golfers enjoy the game more no matter what stage of their golf journey they may be on. I am starting with writing articles oriented around unbiased product reviews in the equipment and tech space but plan to expand bucket list courses, inspiring golf stories, and ways to grow the game.
Why equipment first?
I believe there is an overwhelming abundance of equipment available today and what equipment is best for a golfer is not very well known, at least to the average consumer. Custom Fitters do a wonderful job of getting clubs in their hands and helping golfers find what works best but that is not always an option and a more educated customer can help the fitter find the best option. There are also Direct-to-consumer brands popping up left and right that offer high-quality products that fitters may not have access to. As an example, there are no less than 18 drivers released in January of 2024 alone. My goal is to try and help golfers better understand the golf market and what clubs fit each player’s criteria.
